    Psalm 121, 1 Timothy 1:17

"Jacob and I went to see The Hobbit in the theater when it came out. There is a scene in the movie when the dwarves are doing battle and they’re alone and then a dwarf comes riding in and declares ‘To the king!’ and it was a really epic moment. Jacob immediately had a song idea around the phrase ‘To the king! I look to the king’ which has become a sort of war cry for us. Our eyes are on God, the king eternal. If we fix our eyes God, we are winning. We had the chorus for a long time and collaborated with Matt Maher to round out the song." -Meredith Andrews.

For the longest time this song was buried under a pile of our demos, until one day I stumbled back over it, or rather it stumbled over me because I heard it in a whole new and important way. Some songs have to wait for their time and It struck me that with everything going on in the world right now, we need to be reminded of God’s wild love for us all!

When we actually allow ourselves to experience this love it changes the way we see ourselves and also those around us. We begin to see people less for there differences and more for their sameness....the sameness that states we are ALL fearfully and wonderfully made and wildly loved by our Creator. This immense love will heal our hearts, eyes, hands and feet if we'll let it! Read more here

Worship. This one word in today’s church culture holds massive connotations. We’ve heard it said over and over again that worship doesn’t equal music and music doesn’t equal worship.

The reality is, for better or worse, we have created a whole sub-culture of Christian music and have labeled it “Worship.” Whichever side of the fence you fall on, it’s important that we think about the place of music in the church, lest history repeat itself again.

A significant turning point in my life occurred when I traveled to Jamaica to help lead worship alongside a missionary team. With my acoustic guitar, I played many contemporary songs that were very well known back in the United States.

The church body joined in the best they could and showed appreciation for my being there. When I had finished, a woman in the congregation stood up and burst into a song. Immediately, I heard tambourines and other percussive instruments join in, followed by the rest of the congregation’s voices.

This is my Papaw's music briefcase. It represents everything that he was as a lay worship leader (or songleader as his Nazarene church would've called it). I remember visiting his church as a little boy and seeing him on the platform, waving his arms to conduct the congregation as they sang hymns out of the hymn book.

As I have thought about what we do as worship leaders, I'm becoming more & more convinced that the whole old school idea of conducting (the concept, not the arm waving) is exactly what we need to be thinking about in the how and why of what we do with the music part of our worship...
